MINUTES FOR MARCH 20, 2008 FOL BOARD MEETING
Because Lauren
was out of the country during our last board meeting, minutes weren't taken. I
scribbled down notes which we can use as unofficial minutes. If I've missed anything,
please feel free to add.
The meeting commenced promptly at
6:30.
We dispensed with the secretary's report because of Lauren's
absence.
John Kuechle present the treasurer's report, which
was accepted.
Wayne and Steve talked about the upcoming book
sale. We don't have a lot of books, considering the last sale was less than two
months ago, but both feel confident there will be enough to make a successful
sale. We reviewed the offer to submit pictures of our sale to the county as part
of their contest and decided it wasn't worth the effort. The book sale flyer is
being finalized by Steve. We moved and approved a measure for Alan to look into
buying a replacement cart for the FOL dolly that's gone missing.
We
dispensed with the membership report because of Sharon's absence.
The
Program Chair, Nancy Kuechle, decided to organize an Edible Books event as the
craft for the April 1 Story Time. Sandy has confirmed that George Chialtas will
give a talk and display paintings throughout the afternoon of April 12, during
and after the book sale.
Publications. As mentioned before,
Steve is doing the book sale flyer. Sandi has completed the newsletter and handed
it off to Kevin. Kevin dropped it off at Office Depot on 3/24, will pick it up
on 3/25 and beg Eadie to stamp and address it. Kevin already has stamps and labels.
Then Alan will deliver remainder to Senior Center and Library.
Librarian's
Report.
For National Library Week, the Friends agreed to
buy food - probably brownies or cupcakes -- for one day's community appreciation
day.
We agreed to purchase a one year subscription of Jewish Athletic Review
in honor of Stephen Klein's late father. The announcement is in the newsletter
and Laura will inform Stephen.
A large number of PCs are being installed in
the library and should be up and running by June.
There is a new young adult
library, Susan Badock.
Family Place will premier on either 4/16 or 4/30,
depending on the county's preference. Alan will give a proclamation from the City.
Old Business:
Alan will examine the broken spinner and
if he can't fix it, we'll throw it out and authorize the purchase of a new one.
New
Business:
It was moved and approved for Laura to purchase
a sign standard.
The Friends received an invitation to participate in the
Ballona Festival. Kevin will respond and request a corner booth.
Moved by
Nancy Kuechle and unanimously approved to donate a gift basket of FOL merchandise
to the Ed Foundation.
FOL received an offer to speak by Resa Foreman on a
variety of psychological topics. Kevin to forward email to Nancy, who will graciously
decline.
We received an offer of free shelving which we can't use. Per Alan,
forward info to CC Historical Society to see if they can use.
Culver City
Reads. We discussed and generally agreed to mount some sort of program in August
on a smaller scale than previous years. The three venues mentioned were the Pacific
Theater with booths etc, erected on the plaza outside, the Robert Frost auditorium,
or the Vets gymnasium. It was suggested that we show 1776, and select appropriate
patriotic book(s) to read in preparation. There are many children's books, and
there is a new biography of John Adams that would be appropriate for adults. Alan
will call Pacific Theater. Kevin will call Janice Pober and broach the idea with
her.
Meeting adjourned 8:52 until Tuesday, April 15.
